Unbidden

Bruised eyes staring in the mirror, incomprehension
why am I like this, why is there always so much fear
What ever happened to the child that I wanted to be
what ever happened to the dreams that I had?

Solid as a wall, one must force their way through the smokey gloom
tentative steps sometimes taken on hands and knees
Sometimes I just want to lie where I fall and wait for it to be over
but always something makes me go on.

Tears are wept, souls fly free, love disappears
tree limbs crisscrossed, hiding the exit
The gloom a tangible taste in your copper-ed mouth
when all you want is the light and growth.
