There is a Benefit…..

I live in the province of Manitoba.
On the great North American landmass.
The part known as Canada.
Manitoba is not a wealthy province like oil rich Alberta.
We do not have the land mass or population of Ontario and Quebec.
What we do have is a hearty constitution and an ability to roll with the punches.
We have cold weather.
There have been days when we are colder than Mars.
Those are the days when we mutter and curse and try to figure out why we live here.
In the summer our weather is hot and humid or dry.
Depends on rain amounts.
We also have huge mosquitos.
And a lot of them.
The joke about Manitoba is we have two seasons: Winter and Mosquito/Construction Season.
We do have spring and fall but they are temperate more in line with the rest of the world.
For the last three weeks everyone has been caught beneath this polar vortex.
There are vast swaths of dark purple and blue running through the weather maps.
Now I understand the blue but when did dark purple become associated with cold weather.
Purple is a wonderful color and I take exception to it being used as an indication of frigidness.
Can you tell what my favorite color is.
Our overnight lows have been in the -40’s with real feel.
Our daytime highs have been mid -30’s with real feel.
Cars freeze.
You never feel warm.
Everyone is complaining.
Our temperature is finally rising back to normal levels.
I mean it is only -19 right now as I write this.
In shorts and a tank top.
Because my hot flashes have returned.
That is right the one benefit to it being absolutely freezing?
I did not have one single hot flash during that time.
There were a few moments of heat but not where my whole body is on fire and sweat is beading on my forehead.
As I am standing there doing nothing.
Yesterday three times!!!!
Three bloody times.
Two I was able to feel coming on so whipped off my sweater and did not hit critical melting point.
Third time I was in a till with a customer.
I was sweating and so hot by the time I finished her order.
Even taking my sweater off did not help this time around.
This morning I was once more feeling the heat.
Ended up turning the heat to coolish in the car after dropping T off at school.
And having to run and buy him lunch because he had to make his own.
After arguing with me and I told him that he had to eat I dropped off his lunch with a breezy:
Me: I am T. Doerksen’s mom. He decided that he was not going to make himself lunch today so I am riding to the rescue.
Secretary: Oh you are a nice mom.
Me: That’s what I told him.
I am not about to let him starve to death.
No matter what he says.
I have the rest of my afternoon to relax.
T does not get let out of school until 3:30.
I will warm the car then.
I do not deal well with lots of cars and picking up T and all these other kids everywhere.
And parents.
T even knows.wp-161367591851092578311562334262.png
Going to go and kick back.
Have a quick nap before going to pick up The Beast.
And turn the heat back up again.
Apparently 13 is a little too chill even for me.

  1. So the hot flashes, have you heard of Ladycare plus menopause magnets? I had the worst hot flashes and cold rushes, I had a hysterectomy at 32 so I went on the change instantly after my surgery. HRT didn’t agree with me, I still wanted to murder certain people… all of the time…. (divorce is a wonderful counteraction to that).I sacked the HRT and bought a Ladycare plus magnet, I never looked back. It is awesome. I stopped having the hot and cold flashes, my mood swings disappeared, my husband remained breathing so I could divorce him and life pretty much returned to normal service within a few days of wearing the magnet. Look it up, it’s a tad on the expensive side but the bonus is, you don’t need to keep buying new ones. 🙂

  2. Here in Texas, even in the winter we normally have the fans on because it helps deal with heat and cold and we can set the thermostat up or down accordingly. However, with this frigid weather, I’m not using the fan in the living room. Just sitting here wrapped in a blanket because 67 in the house is too cold for me. It’s 27 outside and the low will be 14. They are scared more pipes will break, and we are under mandatory boil water notice to conserve what we have. Thousands still have no heat, and many don’t have water either due to broken pipes. I think He’ll has definitely frozen over! Y’all may be used to this be, but we are not! Grateful to be sitting here doing nothing for the moment, but I’m afraid I’m about to be figuring out how to wash dishes, clothes etc. with bottled water, or snow melt, or whatever. Snow melted a lot today though, so what about when it’s all gone? I’m so confused right now.

    1. You won’t be able to use melted snow. It takes way way too much time. A lot of work for so little return. It has to be extremely scary for you not knowing what is happening or when things will return to normal. Remember to add on layers. You can always take off when you get warm. Socks. Sweater. Tights with a pair of sweats over top. And build a bundle of blankets around you. I am thinking about you and sending you warm thoughts.

    1. Good morning and I know that I can say that because not only are we on same time we live in the same province. This is the first time that I have had anyone from Manitoba reach out via my blog. I am off for the next three days have just sat down with my coffee and son’s chrome book (my laptop is currently providing support for the water bottle to squirt the cat with as windows has crashed) and read posts. I am planning to come by and visit you in a bit on your blog (ha ha ha stalker sounding or what?) Hope that you have a great day. 🙂
