Grocery Etiquette 104

When did it become the norm to not say excuse me? Did it happen and someone just forgot to send me the memo?

I was brought up to be polite. When I need to get by someone, I say excuse me. If I need something from the shelf I will either say excuse me I just need to snag that or would you mind handing me….. I was also brought up to not stand so close to someone I could smell the soap they used, but it does not seem to have translated to the here and now.

When someone is working on the shelf where the item you want is located, or just slightly above, saying excuse me could you please hand me a can of corn or beans or whatever you want and they will gladly hand it to you. What is really not a nice thing to do is reach over the worker, grab one can while also knocking over a can which then lands on the knee cap of said person. Especially when one cannot swear to alleviate the pain.

And please do not use that smarmy ‘I’m sorry’ tone which is a clear indication that you are not sorry.

Needless to say, I envisioned an entire wall of cans falling on the customer.

  1. Some people! I have another one. When the customer parks their cart smack dab in the MIDDLE of the aisle and wanders off. Or, they park their cart in the middle and are so oblivious to the other customer saying “Excuse me. Excuse me! EXCUSE ME!”, and then give you a dirty look for raising your voice.

    1. I find that so rude. Or customers stopping side by side so others cannot get by. I now have started moving the carts over or walking up behind customer and say ‘Excuse me (note those words again 🤣🤣🤣) I am just scootching passed you don’t want to startle you.
Which I easily could because I walk in stealth mode and no one hears me until I am behind them. I will do one about grocery carts soon. Because it is not only those taking up aisles but leaving carts all over parking lot. And the people who do are usually the ones who have left carts out and then a big wind comes along and wham right into their vehicle. That is called divine justice in my little world. Have not looked at knee yet to see color of bruise.

  2. I’m afraid people with manners, ethics anf values are slim pickin’s nowadays. Right now, the devil’s winning. But I read the book and he loses the war.

  3. Ugh! The older I get, the less I like people (collectively). It’s so frustrating! I always mumble under my breath “yeah, it’s your world. We’re just living in it.” Lack of courtesy is my biggest pet peeve! I am sorry you have to deal with rude people!
