I’m Disappointed

Monday was National Indigenous Peoples Day.
A day to celebrate cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Indigenous peoples of Canada.
As I lay on the couch scrolling through Facebook I came across a shoutout on our local city page to Superstore and how at 2:15 they had a minute of silence for the 215 found children.
I thought that was so awesome.
And Superstore is a part of the Loblaws family so corporation type attitudes.
Yet they took a minute to stand in silence for those beautiful lost souls.
I was checking to see if I had any orders when I remember what I had come across and said something.
Me: Hey I was scrolling Facebook because what else do you do when I saw a shoutout to Superstore about a minute of silence for the children? Are we going to be doing something like that?
AM: Yesterday was National Indigenous Peoples Day so if we were going to do it it would have been yesterday.
Me: Oh. I totally thought it was a great idea.
AM: I messaged M and asked. He said it was not a big thing. And it is during the calls so we decided not to do it. (I am 99.9% sure this is a lie)
Me (getting up): I thought it was a really good idea.
And I walked out.
I was really bothered by this.
Really bothered.
It gnawed at me.
Annoyed me.
I had to go and check orders and when I sat down I made a noise.
Like ooomph.
Every time I sit down or bend over I make noise like one of those old fashioned fire starter things that you pumped together.
All the time.
AA: You ok?
Me: Yeah. (Spinning in chair to look at him): I have been thinking and I am disappointed that we did not honor them with a minute of silence. We talk all the time about being an open…..I’m just disappointed that we made the choice not to do it. Especially since we did have the opportunity to do so.
He looked at me as I walked out of the room.
Not saying anything.
I came home and told T all about it.
He was like no that is wrong.
I was annoyed as I was spitting things out about what was said etc.
Me: I am so annoyed I might blog about it.
T: Mom you should.
I realized something important yesterday.
I do not care if fellow co-workers do not like me.
If I make them uncomfortable by stating my disappointment so be it.
Our not participating was wrong.
For me it is tantamount to saying we agree with residential schools, the abuses and terrors that were perpetrated.
That is how I see it.
And I am so ashamed.
