Can I Catch a Thief?

I could.
If not stuck in a till or on the phone.
I have an unusual talent.
I can spot shoplifters.
That’s right.
Awesome talent to go along with the one where my thumb is always over the barcode when I cannot find it.
Not sure if it is because they have a furtive air about them but I have been known to alert management to the individual and stop several hundreds of dollars worth of groceries from being absconded with.
These last two times I have not been as lucky.
The first time I was in checkout #1.
Our express till.
I am talking to my customer when I notice a woman scarfing her food down.
And when I say scarfing-one hand held the box the other hand was shoveling it into her mouth.
Another woman came up and she was offered some of the meal.
Not much daintier that one.
Something about them set my radar atwitching.
Called to the supervisor at CS and indicated my suspicions.
The two women I was watching come from a religious sect that is in and around us.
They are notorious for shop lifting/returning stolen product etc.
Pious.
Devout.
Thieves.
This is their reputation throughout.
And I have had instances of them attempting to return stolen product.
Or product that is outdated.
I was talking with my customer when I spotted the two women walking confidentially towards the door.
I glanced over at CS and the supervisor was three deep in customers.
And helplessly I watched the two women leave the store.
Do I think that they might have paid?
No not in the least.
And it was all in the way she was eating.
If there had been a trough she would have dived right on in there.
Maybe she was eating something forbidden?
Chicken wings/french fries/onion rings I just do not know but I doubt it.
The customer I was serving at the time had also noticed the gobbling of food.
She also watched in amazement as they left the store.
Yesterday I needed to call my customer about something and stopped at customer service to use the phone.
Yes I have a phone however it is spotty at best.
Some days it works really well and others not so much so.
There was an elderly gentleman standing there and I say excuse me please I need to use the phone.
He looks at me and I dialed the phone.
He looked at me more.
And more.
Finished my call and asked if I could help him.
He said yes he wanted to exchange his water bottles.
I said ok and went behind the counter to get him the cards.
The phone rang and I answered it looking in the cupboard to pull out two water bottle cards.
I am listening to the customer talk when I see the elderly gentleman walk out the door.
Pushing a cart with two full water bottles in it.
I could only stand there amazed as he kept going.
I could not hang up on the customer and I am sure that my face was looking quite incredulous.
Again I am not the only one who noticed this.
Another customer shrugged and thought maybe he might return.
He never did.
I mentioned the episodes to our assistant manager.
Told him I needed a lasso like Wonder Woman.
Not for truth telling but for thief taking.
Jay the Thief Taker has a nice ring to it.
