Hunger Abated

Time
history glutted on myths
on tales told true
forgetting though
those tales of old
about monsters and what’s due.
Close the shutters.
Lock
bar them tight
ignore that tapping you hear
for should you open the door
no one be found
for no one is there.
Yet once the door is closed
a chill descends
mystery odor
cabbage mixed with sewer
mixed with blood?
Prowl the house
check under the bed
closets are sealed tight
sashes locked
low mocking laughter
are you just being paranoid?
Family manor
derelict
run down
ashes to ashes
dust to dust
burning it down
would bring relief.
Candle light flickers
cool breeze
licks your ears
sudden screech
piercing to the inner core.
Drop the candle
run run run
my sweet little one…..
as always
I shall dawdle
letting you get a head start
before I swoop in.

Word of the Day Challenge #69-Untitled Poem

Prancing down the streets
peering in windows
wondering where I will crawl in
what I am going to find
in these houses
charmed to keep me out.
A shadow spilled over the streets
gliding between shades of grey
an image
captured from the corner of your eye
enough to make you
cringe
second guess your senses
whimper in fear.
Clackity clack
nails tipped in black
tap-ity-tap
nails shaped as talons
my voice
a sinuous whisper
curling around your ear
causing you to rise
to pull down the blinds
before reassuring yourself as is well.
Sidle in
shape shifter
call for the kitty
and in I come.
Almost you won
almost you fought the war
stare into my eyes
beg and plead
as I drink your life’s blood.
